DIY Valentine Doggie Treats

All the lovey-dovey Valentine crafting going on, I felt bad leaving out my main man! He may have four legs and rust colored hair, but he's my bud and I've been wanting to try some homemade dog treats. I made these heart shaped dog treats last week and Birch devoured them!

Ingredients

1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup melted peanut butter
1 egg
1/2 cup cold water
drizzle of honey

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine whole wheat flour and wheat germ in a large bowl. Mix peanut butter, egg and water and whisk until you get a thin creamy texture. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients mix until dough forms. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky. Add more water if the dough is too tough.

Roll out onto a floured surface and cut into desired shaped - bars or heart shapes! You can poke holes to prevent them puffing up. Bake for approximately 18 - 20 minutes or until lightly browned. The full 20 minutes might have been a little too long in my oven.

I've seen recipes with bacon fat, recipes with peanut butter and recipes with chicken broth. I didn't have the complete list of ingredients on any of the recipes I saw, so I made this one up. It held together really well and I love the way they look crunchy on the edges.

Birch was such a good model and photography assistant! He could barely stand not to jump up on the table and gobble them up. I was worried I'd give him a tummy ache if he ate them all in one day, so he didn't get them all. You're welcome, Birch!
